Sports Massage

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage suitable for all individuals whether you’re a desk worker or athlete.

It has a variety of benefits, including improved circulation, better sleep, reduced muscle soreness, and increased range of motion.

Sports massage and other soft tissue techniques are a big part of what we do as therapists and you will often receive massage within our standard physiotherapy assessments and treatments. Sports massage is also an integral part of our maintenance treatments.

Sports massage can help to improve athletic performance, prevent injuries, and speed up recovery time. In addition, it can also help to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Here at Cornwall Physio, you can let us know that you would like to have lots of massage in your treatment and we’ll take care of this for you.

Can I Benefit From A Sports Massage?

Sports massage is great for relaxation, sleep and recovery. The great thing about receiving treatment here at Cornwall Physio is that you don’t need to try to choose the best treatment option – we take care of this for you. Book a physiotherapy assessment and we’ll hear about your symptoms and goals and provide the best combination of treatments to help you with this.

Do i Need Sports Massage Or Physio?

At Cornwall Physio you don’t need to worry about making this decision yourself- just let us know what you need help with and we’ll take care of everything for you. All of our treatments are carried out by expert physiotherapists and sports rehabilitators who can treat AND diagnose injury. This is completely different to most places where you’ll receive sports massage.

Is Massage From A Physiotherapist Different?

Yes, physiotherapists are experts at treating and diagnosing injury. You’ll tend to find they are much more experienced at providing massage than a general sports massage therapist…. But the huge difference will be knowledge. If you want to know WHY things are feeling tight or sore then you need a qualified therapist. The good news is that all of our therapists are fully qualified to diagnose and treat injury… we don’t employ anyone who is only qualified to do sports massage.

What Is Maintenance Physio?

From years of working with active people and athletes we’ve realised that it’s better to prevent issues happening in the first place, rather than waiting for people to have pain. If you are fit and well at the moment (including people who have just finished a course of injury treatment with us) maintenance physio is a great option. We keep you well, providing the best combination of massage, machines, dry needling etc for your body. We often see people once a month for their maintenance treatment and because these sessions are with our qualified clinicians we can diagnose, advise and provide the most appropriate treatment any time you come to a session with a new ache or tight bit!

Does Sports Massage Help With Injuries?

Sports massage is simply a treatment technique and not something we would recommend in isolation if you have a specific injury or tight area. For specific aches or pains it’s important to have a diagnosis and specific treatment to address the underlying cause. As all of our sessions are carried out by fully qualified physiotherapists or sports rehabilitators, we’ll take care of that for you and will make sure you’re booked in as a Physiotherapy session.

How Long Do I Need?

All of our treatment sessions are 30 mins long. Even if we are massaging you for the whole session, longer treatments have been shown to have diminishing returns. Shorter treatments give the best outcomes for exercise recovery, event preparation and improving sleep.

Is A Sports Massage Painful?

It shouldn’t be overly painful and definitely doesn’t need to be in order to get benefits. Different people prefer different amounts of pressure- just let us know what works best for your body.

When Is The Optimum Time To Get A Massage?

If we’re using massage to prepare for a race or event the optimal time is often 2-6 days beforehand. The most important thing is that your body is used to receiving treatment… You should practice having treatment the same way you practice using energy drinks or gels. it’s never a good idea to have your first treatment a few days before an important event!

What Footwear Do I Need To wear For My Massage?

Flexible, loose fitting clothing is a great idea, including shorts. Female clients will usually find it easier to wear a standard bra with a clip at the back, rather than a sports bra.
